Die bereits 1916 gegründete Industrial Santa Matilde wagte 1977 den Schritt zur Automobilproduktion. Bis dahin baute Santa Matilde Traktoren, Bulldozer, Mähdrescher und Lokomotiven, sowie war als Bergwerkunternehmen tätig. Das SM genannte Fahrzeug hielt sich bis 1987 im Programm und wurde sogar bis 1997 noch auf Bestellung gefertigt. Insgesamt entstanden 937 Fahrzeuge (davon 76 Cabriolets).
